“Jungle” All The Way
I was born & raised in the city.
So practically, I’ve never seen an actual jungle in my
childhood.
Except in the TV series “Tarzan” by Edgar Rice Burroughs (the
Tarzan master).
memperkenalkan Brendan Fraser ke dunia perfilman Hollywood - “George of the
Jungle”. Lagi-lagi slapstick di tengah pepohonan yg lmyn rindang yg mrk sebut
hutan.
Kalimantan. Wow, kebayangnya..…wild bgt! Hutan Borneo gitu lho! (how naïve I
was).
Dan akhirnya benar2 merasakan ‘the real taste of a jungle’!
(even though it’s not really jungle anymore – yg kesannya wild bgt – tp uda lbh
merupakan forest & what’s left of it).
Inget bgt rasanya naik Cessna dan melihat hamparan ‘blumkol’
di bawah. I was impressed! The real jungle out there.

And then, after 3 years, back to the city.
Dimana langit biru termasuk agak langka (biasanya biru pucat
namun surga bg homeless people).
dulu.
Or, so I thought.
akreditasi Serukam), I was called for the 1st interview & test.
Dan pd minggu ke-6, I got a new job as a ward doctor in one of the (quite new)
hospital in Bdg.
Actually there was another hospital which called me in for
interview. But I turned it down because they insisted on having me to work in a
hemodialysis unit.
Sehari setelah confirm diterima, lsg disuruh msk u/
orientasi. 2mg orientasi di ruangan, @1 mg di IGD & ICU, & 1 hr di HD. Orientasinya
bener2 u/ pembiasaan diri, bkn pendidikan kyk di Serukam. Pengenalan sistem kerja,
istilah2 yg dipakai, kebiasaan “do & don’t”, dan menghafal yg perlu dihafal.
Sistem kerjanya per shift, 1 hari 3 shift, dan sekali masuk biasanya 2 shift
(about 15 hrs or so).
simptomatik & pertolongan pertama gawat darurat. Tapi ada juga spesialis yg
tdk mau pxnya dijamah dr.ruangan. Mangga wae =))
Rs ada bonus kerjaan bwt dr.ruangan disini : kudu
anam&periksa ulang pxs baru yg msk ke ruangan.
Dibanding Serukam, RS ini memang lbh besar & jauuuuh lbh
lengkap.
andalan utama (selain tentu saja kaki & HP jaga). Klo lift ngantri, ya mau tak
mau pk tangga. Tp pengkor juga klo 7-8 lt via tangga (aigooo…). Lbh byk org,
lbh byk pxs (around 190pxs per day), lebih kompleks, dan perbedaan nilai2 yg
mendasar. Segala hal yg jauh berbeda ini jadi “culture shock” tersendiri buatku.
Hahaha, lucu juga kan, masa org kota kembali ke kota jd culture shock lagi??
Setelah 1 bln tiba2 aku menyadari bhw jarang melihat langit, jarang merasakan
hembusan angin, dan jarang terkena matahari. Sometimes it feels like u’re
trapped in a building.
So, I came out of a jungle to enter another one – a concrete
jungle.
Tidak berarti bhw aku tidak mengantisipasinya terlebih
dahulu. Different
point of view, different needs, different attitudes, beda hal yang dituntut (scr
general sih sm, tp byk details yg beda). Kebutuhan aktualisasi diri,
greediness, lust, konsumerisme yg lbh ngeri, individualismenya lbh tinggi, dan
skala konflik kepentingannya lebih besar. Singkat kata, tantangannya adl
bagaimana menjaga integritas di dunia sekuler. Tapi tentu saja smua kerasa lbh
real klo udah nyemplung sendiri di dlmnya drpd sekedar dgr kata org.
##
Akhirnya kubaca juga buku yg sdh kubeli sjk akhir 2009 (tp
tersimpan rapi di rak lemari, bknnya dibaca hehehe). The title is “Integrity @
Work” by DR.Norman L. Geisler & DR. Randy Douglass. Kalimat pengantarnya
diterapkan? Adakah cara untuk seorang Kristen terus eksis dlm karier professional
tnp hrs berkompromi dgn nilai2 dunia yg sekuler?”
Dunia kerja bagaikan hutan belantara.
melakukan dikotomi dlm hidupnya. Pd hr Mg, mrk mjd org Kristen dan hidup dlm
nilai mutlak dr Allah.
yg “relatif”.
Maka kita perlu memiliki satu pedoman moral u/ membimbing
kita melalui belantara etis dlm pekerjaan. Fungsi kompas pedoman moral adalah :
-
Penjaga agar tdk tersesat
-
Penunjuk arah yg pasti dan konsisten à Utara selalu Utara
-
Penunjuk arah yg benar
Salah satu bentuk kompas pedoman moral yg dirancangkan adalah
Kompas ETHICS. Suatu panduan bertahap dalam membuat keputusan-keputusan etis
berdasarkan ajaran Allah dlm Alkitab, t.u di tmp kerja (tp sbnrnya bs
diterapkan diluar tmp krj). Kucoba menguraikannya sdkt disini. Untuk penjelasan
lbh lkp bsrta cth2 kasusnya silakan dibaca sendiri ya. Soale hrs bc cth
kasusnya beserta langkah2nya spy bs ngerti. Worthed bgt kok bknya ^^
E T H I C S
E = Examine the Facts
T = (Seek the) Truth
H = Hesitate
I = Identify the Greater Good
C = Consider Consequences &
Creative Alternatives
S = Stand for GOD
E = Examine the Facts
Sblm mengambil keputusan, pastikan semua fakta tlh dipaparkan
di hadapan Anda. Cari tahu dulu keseluruhan faktanya sampai Anda mengetahui
fakta mana saja yg relevan.
T = (Seek the) Truth
Mintalah hikmat dari Allah melalui doa & pembacaan Firman
Tuhan
H = Hesitate
Coba periksa mengapa Anda ragu2 :
-
Apakah tahu tapi tidak tahu cara melakukannya?
-
Atau tahu tapi takut melakukannya? (cf. Gal 1:10; I Tes 2:4)
(Luk 6:31)
I = Identify the Greater Good
Menemukan kewajiban moral yg lbh tinggi : Ada satu hierarki
nilai yang menempatkan Allah diatas segala sesuatunya è ingat Hukum Kasih (Mat 22:37-40) è “U shall LOVE the Lord your GOD with all your heart &
with all your soul & with all your mind. This is the great & 1st
commandment. And a 2nd is like it: You shall LOVE your NEIGHBOR as YOURSELF.
On these 2 commandments depend all the Law & the Prophets.”
Allah
Þ
Manusia (org lain)
Þ
Manusia (diri sendiri)
Þ
Non manusia (hewan, tumbuhan,
harta benda)
Jelaslah bhw Allah >>> penguasa, lbh bernilai
Atasan kita yg sejati adl Allah sendiri.
C = Consider Consequences & Creative Alternatives
Ingat bhw org yg etis akan memakai cara2 yg baik u/ mcapai
hsl2 terbaik. Tapi tindakan yg benar bisa menghasilkan konsekuensi yg sulit.
Pikirkan apa saja konsekuensinya (jika menaati Allah &
bukan manusia)?
Apakah ada pilihan alternatif lainnya? (e.g kasus Daniel, 3
tmnnya, dan makanan raja)
-
Apakah tujuan dasar dari masalah etis tsb?
-
Apakah ada cara yang lebih baik?
-
Apakah ada pendekatan bijak ?
S = Stand for GOD
tmn Daniel & perapian yg menyala, kasus Daniel & gua singa).
Ingat bhw : penderitaan akan membawa kemuliaan
NOTE :
C only exist jika
Tujuannya benar.
Jika Tujuannya sudah
salah, sudah tidak ada alternatif lain selain Stand for Gos & refuse to do
what’s wrong
Selain itu, buku ini jg membahas dilema seksual di tmp kerja;
dilema etis seorg atasan, karyawan, dgn para pelanggan, dan seputar
keseimbangan ant.pkerjaan dan keluarga. Jadi bkn hny u/ seorang pekerja saja,
tetapi juga u/ seorang atasan.
##
Namanya juga tempat baru. They said 3-first-months were the
hardest. I guess it’s true ^^” Rasanya sulit u/ benar2 betah hehehe…. Yah, mgkn
perlu wkt lbh byk. Yg nyebelin tuh intrik2 diluar mslh medicalnya. Hal yg umum
terjadi dimanapun kita bekerja.
There’s no heaven, not even Serukam ^^ Mere human
in a fallen world. We all need God’s grace, constantly, abundantly ;D
Sedang merasa ditantang ttg mslh profession (work) VS
ministry. Bgmn membagi waktu yg tinggal sedemikian untuk berbagai prioritas
hidup. But I still believe there’s no dichotomy – my profession is my ministry
& I wish that I can continue serving God through medical practice. Kmdn msh
byk pertanyaan2 ttg “Go where the need is greatest” & “jangan pilih
kemapanan tp pelayanan”. Dalam “Go where the need is greatest”, kata ‘need’-nya
msh berkonotasi remote areas, tp sbnrnya definisi ‘need’ luas dan bervariasi.
Lalu mslh kebutuhan aktualisasi diri, greediness, lust, konsumerisme, individualisme,
dan konflik kepentingan yg aku sebutkan diatas. Gak berarti bhw itu hny tjd di
kota besar. Hny beda skala. Org2 yg
begitu punya uang lsg bli brg2 non kebutuhan primer-sekunder demi gengsi sm
tetangga. Berebut jd PNS spy kerja sedikit, bs nyatut & nyambi, tp hari tua
terjamin. Berebut jd pejabat/wkl rakyat u/ ambisi pribadi. Hanya saja rasa
kekeluargaan & gotong royongnya masih lbh terasa drpd di kota. Godaan2 lain
No, I do not think
that you can only serve God as a doctor at a mission hospital. I believe
that Christians can serve God in any profession in any place in a way that
brings glory to Him, pleases His heart, and shines as a witness to all those
around. That is what we are to do.
WSC Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.
WSC Q. 39. What is the duty which God requireth of man?
A. The duty which God requireth of man, is obedience to his revealed will.
I believe that you can serve God effectively as a doctor at a big city hospital. The challenges will be different, the needs will be different. But people will still need to be given loving, competent, compassionate care in the name of Jesus.
It is harder not to get carried away in the rush for higher salary, more money, and more material things, but not impossible to stay focused on serving God, living a simple lifestyle, and sharing any excess generously for those in need and for the work of God.
1Ti 6:18 “They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share”
Heb 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
The tendency is to rush through seeing patients as fast as possible, because this is what usually generates the most money. But, sometimes things get missed, and the patient can tell they are just a number. When you see patients as a Christian doctor, spend a little more time with them, ask them their life story, about family, etc. Offer to pray if they seem open and there is opportunity. You will enjoy your work more, you will be impacting patients for God, and you will be a testimony to your colleagues and staff.
I pray God's blessing on your efforts in the coming days.

The reason I write this sama sekali tidak bermaksud mencari
pembenaran diri (ttg bekerja di kota VS di daerah terpencil). Hanya berusaha
memahami “the reason why” for many things & saat ini, scr actual, aku
sedang ada di kota. Baik di kota, maupun di daerah terpencil, subjeknya adl
manusia. Ada kebutuhan2 yg berbeda, tapi kebutuhan dasar mns tetap sm. Ada byk
tantangan di daerah terpencil, tapi lebih2 lagi di kota.
Terasa sekali mslh pergi ke grj, ke persek, terlibat
pelayanan.
situ, gak usah susah2 hehehe. Byk sudara seiman dgn visi, misi, passion yg
sama. Tiba2 di kota, org2 demikian seakan-akan brg langka (padahal sama
banyaknya kok, hny tersebar, tdk dilokalisasi spt di Serukam wkwkwk)
Wkt resign, blm ada tmp kerja pengganti. Sempat terbayang apa
jadinya klo menganggur berbulan-bulan. Tapi Tuhan bukakan jln. I believe it’s
from God. And for now it’s my duty to perform there well – while waiting &
praying for the next step. I still believe that we ought to serve the most
unfortunate people, especially in remote areas. I still pray for a way to do
that. Or else, go to school? But w/ the conscience of dedicating my knowledge &
skills, again, for those who can’t afford it. Because for those who can afford
it, many helps are already available.
There’s still so many things I do not know or understand.
But I believe in Him who holds my future.

The concrete jungle. My temporary “home” for now.
What I like the most from that concrete is the sunrise view
from 7th floor, where the ward doctor’s room lies.
It reminds me of God, and the (incomparable) borneosky ^^
Proverbs 3 : 5-7
“Trust in
the Lord with all your heart,
and do not
lean on your own understanding.
In all your
way acknowledge him,
and he will
make straight your paths.
Be not wise
in your eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”
